Please be aware that we have received notice that citizens are being contacted by callers claiming to be part of the Clerk’s Office and that they are being served with papers.  The caller will then give the citizen several details of personal information and require a large payment, usually around $1,500, to avoid legal trouble.

Be aware that the Suwannee County Clerk’s Office does not call our citizens to serve papers and does not call asking for payment of such funds.

If you have been contacted by such individuals, please write down as much information as you recall and then report it to the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office at 386.362.2222 and also our office at 386.362.0500.”

The Suwannee County Clerk’s Office has received reports that our main phone number, 386-362-0500, is being spoofed and used to impersonate a police department from Winter Park. The caller may urge you to call them back at a different number. Please be advised that this is a common phishing tactic.

It is important to note that the incoming call may appear to be originating from the Suwannee County Clerk’s Office. However, this is part of the scam. We urge you to exercise caution and refrain from returning any calls to the number provided by the impersonator.

Effective immediately (February 9, 2023), and in accordance with Florida Statute 713.13(1)(g), “owners must sign the notice of commencement and no one else may be permitted to sign in his or her stead.”

The U.S. Government recently announced its plan to give citizens up to $20,000 of student loan relief, and cyber criminals have taken note! Look out for phishing emails that appear to come from an official federal agency, such as the U.S. Dept. of Education. Stay vigilant and visit official government websites for the best information.

SCAM ALERT

The Requested Fine for Missed Jury Duty is a SCAM

Please be aware that scammers are contacting Florida residents claiming they missed jury duty and requesting residents to pay a fine by purchasing a gift card to Clerks’ offices. This was reported in the Manatee and Sarasota County area and it is not clear the extent of the spread of the scam.

If you receive suspicious communication, please contact your local law enforcement.

BEWARE OF FRAUDULENT TELEPHONE CALLS!
CLERK’S OFFICE WARNS OF SCAM FOR
SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER AND LEGAL TROUBLES

Please be warned that fraudulent telephone calls are being reported locally where the caller claims to be calling from the Suwannee County Clerk’s Office from a phone number listed as some variation of 386.362.05XX, typically 386.362.0547.  The telephone scam suggests that the recipient has legal troubles and should confirm their identify by providing the last four digits of their Social Security Number.  The caller may identify themselves as a supposed employee of the Clerk’s Office.  These calls are from con artists spoofing Clerk’s Office telephone numbers, as the Suwannee County Clerk’s Office does not request Social Security Numbers over the phone.

If you receive a suspicious telephone call suggesting you have legal troubles, requesting personal information, or asking for payment for something you believe to be fraudulent, write down as much information about the telephone call as possible and contact the Clerk’s Office directly at 386.362.0500 or through our website at www.suwgov.org.  You should also report the incident to the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office at 386.362.2222.

NOTICE OF THE RIGHT OF ANY AFFECTED PARTY TO REQUEST THE ADDITION OF INFORMATION TO A PUBLICLY AVAILABLE INTERNET WEBSITE

Any affected person has a right to request that a county recorder or Clerk of the Court add information to a publicly available Internet website if that information involves the identity of a respondent against whom a final judgment for an injunction for the protection of a minor under s. 741.30, s. 784.046, or s. 784.0485, F.S., is entered, unless the respondent is a minor. The request must be in writing and contain the case number. Any person has a right to request that a county recorder remove, from a publicly available Internet website, information made exempt from inspection or copying under s. 119.071, F.S., or an image or copy of a public record, including an official record, if that image or copy is of a military discharge; death certificate, or a court file, record or paper relating to matters or cases governed by the Florida Rules of Family Law, the Florida Rules of Juvenile Procedure, or the Florida Probate Rules. However, grantor, grantee or party names may not be removed from the Official Records index unless the grantor, grantee or party name includes the street address, such as in a Trust or LLC. Requests must be notarized, state the statutory basis for removal, and confirm the individual’s eligibility for the exemption.
